Falls And Multiple Sclerosis

Over half of persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) report falling over a 6-month period and half of those who fall require medical attention for injuries. To make matters worse, a fall can result in activity curtailment, physiological deconditioning, and institutionalization. Despite the adverse effects of falls in persons with MS, very little is known about the factors related to falls in this special population. This lack of information has minimized the effectiveness of programs designed to prevent falls.Currently, Dr. Sosnoff's research team in collaboration with  Professors Motl and McAuley are investigating factors related to falls as well as if home based exercise and/or educational training can minimize fall incidence and risk in persons wtih MS.
